The vision for this Northville, MI, project was to echo the home’s formal style in the gardens, but also to create a relaxed entertaining space in the backyard. Visitors are greeted with a beautiful paver walkway with a brick border that steps up gradually to the home’s entry. A low brick wall topped with flower-filled urns complement the home’s stately columns and brick facade. In the back yard, a covered porch houses a gourmet kitchen, as well as a cozy paver patio featuring a large fireplace. In the backyard, too, brick accents, walls, and borders unify the outdoor spaces. The only more random feature of this formal landscape is a path of stepping stones; otherwise, the landscaping is precise, organized, and symmetrical. This landscape is a masterpiece in its own right, not merely playing a supporting role to the home.
